Pinckneyville MS to Host Annual Arbor Day Celebration

Post Date:04/16/2018 2:20 PM

On Friday, April 27, the Peachtree Corners community is joining Pinckneyville Middle School students, faculty, and the city’s mayor and council to celebrate its third Arbor Day event.

The festivities, to be held on the school grounds, include planting new trees. During the event students will also learn proper tree pruning techniques. The event is hosted by the city’s Green Committee.

The Arbor Day celebration will also include the designation of the city's third Heritage tree which are recognized by size and age. A different tree is selected each year based on its exceptional size, form and rarity.  A bronze plaque, presented by Councilmember Jeanne Aulbach, will be placed at the base of the tree in the coming weeks.

Arbor Day is set aside for schools, civic clubs and other organizations, as well as individuals to reflect on the importance of trees in our state and across the nation.

"Trees are an essential part of the city," said Mayor Mason. "A healthy urban forest provides benefits including air and water pollution mitigation, habitat for wildlife and storm water runoff reduction."

The event begins at 4:30 p.m. and ends at approximately 5:30 p.m. and takes place on the school’s campus at 5440 W. Jones Bridge Road. The public is welcome to attend. Participants will have an opportunity to take home a little “Arbor” in the form of an Oak or Maple tree seedling.

Gwinnett County’s newest city was also recently recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA. There are 150 Tree Cities USA in Georgia, and nationwide more than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA.
