COVID UPDATE: (As of 12-15-22)

U.S.

99, 682,155 cumulative cases (under-represented due to unreported home tests)

1,086,199 cumulative deaths

657,927,289 total COVID vaccines administered

69% of U.S. population has been fully vaccinated

34% of U.S. population over the age of 65 has received the bivalent COVID booster (newest since Sept, 2022)

GEORGIA

2,963,232 cumulative COVID cases (under-represented due to unreported home tests)

34,186 cumulative COVID deaths

14-day case rate = 173/100,000 population (high transmission category)

14-day % positivity = 11.5% (high transmission category)

16,831,459 total COVID vaccines administered

58% of Georgia population has been fully vaccinated

30% of Georgia population over the age of 60 has received the bivalent COVID booster (newest since 9/2022)

Primary circulating COVID variants - BQ1.1 (41%) and BQ.1 (26%)

The bivalent COVID booster is very effective against current COVID variants.

The bivalent COVID booster is now available for ages 6months and older.

248,490 cumulative COVID cases (under-represented due to unreported home tests)

1,912 cumulative COVID deaths

14-day case rate = 247/100,000 population (high transmission category)

14-day % positivity = 14.7% (high transmission category)

CDC Community transmission level = LOW (reflects hospital capacity/status)

1,575,857 total COVID vaccines administered

63% of Gwinnett County population has been fully vaccinated

INFLUENZA: (As of 12-9-22)

Georgia – VERY HIGH ACTIVITY

Influenza-like illness activity indicators measure activity each week.  Activity levels are based on the percent of outpatient visits in Georgia due to influenza-like illness compared to a 3 year average

Primary influenza strain this season is H3N2 – current vaccine works well against this strain

Influenza vaccine may not prevent infection, but works very well at reducing severity, hospitalization and death

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): (As of 12-9-22)

Currently there are HIGH levels of this virus in Georgia – primarily affecting very young children and the elderly

No vaccine or treatment (other than supportive) is available

Pediatric ICU beds in Georgia are nearing capacity

MPOX: (new name for Monkeypox) – (As of 12-9-22)

Global – 82,762 cases, 65 deaths

U.S. – 29,646 cases, 20 deaths

Georgia – 1,980 cases, 0 deaths

1,141,593 MPOX vaccines given in U.S.

46,027 MPOX vaccines given in Georgia

Watery diarrhea is primary symptom, followed rapidly by dehydration and death if not treated

Treatment is rehydration, antibiotics and zinc supplementation
