Obstacle Descriptions and Instructional Videos
The Ab Station consists of a platform at a 45 degree angle. It allows for several types of ab exercises. The first consists of a head down position with your feet secured by a bar at the top of station. This allows for a standard situp though more challenging because of the ange. A second position consists of a head up position, holding the bar with your hands and then raising your feet into the air to touch the bar.
The Ape Hanger is a 30-foot-long monkey bar, 10 feet high that, instead of metal bars, is on wires and moves as a result. To reach the first bar you must climb a rope. The first 15 feet of the obstacle is ascending and the second half is descending.
The Balancing Logs consist of a series of logs placed at varying heights and distances from each other, creating a narrow path that participants must walk across. The goal is to traverse the logs without falling off or touching the ground. This obstacle is from the Ranger School.
The Bar Traverse consists of two horizontal bars, 10 feet off the ground and 12 feet in length. Participants must traverse the entire length of the bars using their hands, without touching the ground or any support structures.
The Bender consists of a 15-foot wall with horizontal bars set at varying heights, resembling an inverted ladder. Participants must climb up and over the wall using only the bars, without touching the support structure. This obstacle is a mainstay in Spartan races.
Jump onto a platform (there are several heights) with both feet landing on the platform at the same time.
The Cargo Net is a 20-foot high web-like structure built out of sturdy ropes and is secured at both ends. The net is attached to wooden frames. Participants must climb up and over the top of the net, using their hands and feet to navigate the openings.
The Dip Station consists of two parallel bars set at approximately waist height. These bars are sturdy and spaced wide enough to accommodate a person's torso between them. The primary exercise performed on a dip station is the dip, which targets the triceps, chest, and shoulders. Other exercises, such as knee raises, leg raises, and L-sits, can also be performed to work the core muscles.
The High Step Over consists of a series of high barriers that participants must step over moving sideways with their hands behind their heads. The goal is to clear all the barriers. This obstacle is from the Ranger School.
The Inverted Row is a bodyweight exercise. The competitor will lay on a flat surface and grab the bar positioned over their chest and pull themselves toward the bar.
The Low Crawl consists of a 20-foot-long ditch covered with a low overhead net or series of wires, forcing participants to stay low to the ground. Participants must crawl under the net or wires from one end to the other without standing up or getting entangled. There is a tunnel at the end. This obstacle is from the Ranger School.
There are multiple Monkey Bar obstacles at Ft Pain. Two sets consist of a 30-foot-long series of metal horizontal metal bars approximately 7 feet off the ground. A third set consists of a 15-foot series of metal horizontal bars that include an incline climb up to approximately 12 feet. The rungs are spaced evenly, providing enough room for participants to swing from one bar to the next. The primary goal is to traverse the entire length of the monkey bars by swinging from one bar to the next, using only your hands and arms for support.
Navigate a 30 foot long obstacle using rings and bars using only your hands. At no time should your feet touch the ground. You have to stay underneath the Rig and cannot use the structures or side supports.
Olympus Wall is 7 foot high wall, 10 feet in length and at a 70 degree angle. Participant must navigate the length of the wall using 3 different types of holds: holes, chains, and climbing grips. Participants are not allowed to grab on the top of the wall or use their feet on the holds. This obstacle is a mainstay in Spartan races.
The Peg Wall consists of a vertical or slightly inclined wall with a series of holes arranged in a grid pattern. Participants use a pair of wooden or metal pegs to climb the wall by inserting the pegs into the holes. The goal is to ascend or traverse the wall using only the pegs, without touching the ground or any other support structures. Participants must continually move the pegs from one hole to the next to make progress. This obstacle is from American Ninja Warrior.
The Pull-Up Station can be used for a variety of exercises including pull-ups, chin-ups, toes to bar, muscle ups and hanging hold. There are a total of six pull-up bars. Three are approximately 7 feet tall with thicker bars and the other three are approximately 6.5 feet tall with smaller bars.
The Rope Climb consists of a 20-foot-long thick rope. Participants must climb the rope using a combination of upper body and leg strength, reach the top, and touch the wood beam with their hand. This obstacle is a mainstay in Spartan races.
Crawl along a 36-foot horizontal rope that is fixed approximately 9 feet above the ground between two wooden posts. Pull yourself along the rope, never touching the ground, until you touch the far post.
The Salmon Ladder consists of a series of evenly spaced horizontal bars set within a vertical frame, resembling a ladder. Athletes must use a single metal bar to ascend the ladder by "jumping" the bar up from one set of rungs to the next higher set. Based on the obstacle by the same name from American Ninja Warrior.
The Six Vaults consists of six evenly spaced vertical barriers that participants must jump over in quick succession. Six Vaults can be found at the Darby Queen obstacle course at the Army Ranger School.
The Slant Wall consists of a wall that is inclined at an angle, typically around 45 degrees. The wall is covered with a textured surface to provide grip, but it can still be slippery, especially if wet or muddy. The goal is to climb up the slant wall using only your hands and feet, without any additional support. Once at the top, participants must then descend on the other side.
The Swing Stop Jump consists of a rope swing that participants must grab and use to swing across a gap. At the end of the swing, there is a platform or bar that they must jump onto to stop their momentum. The goal is to swing across the gap and successfully land on the platform or bar without falling or losing grip. This obstacle is from the Ranger School.
The Tarzan obstacle consists of three horizontal balance beams suspended at varying heights followed by monkey bars. Participants must walk the three beams without falling and then master the monkey bar by swinging from bar to bar, using their upper body strength and momentum to move forward without touching the ground. The Tarzan can be found at the Darby Queen obstacle course at the Army Ranger School.
To do the Wall Climb you must successfully scale an 8-foot wall using a combination of grip strength, chest and leg strength. This obstacle is a mainstay in Spartan races.
The Warped Wall is a curved wall that athletes must run up and scale to reach the top. There are two walls. One is 12 feet and one is 10 feet. Based on the obstacle by the same name from American Ninja Warrior which is 14 feet tall.
The Z-Wall is a seven to eight-foot-high wall shaped like the letter "Z". It features two levels of wooden pieces extending from the wall, creating a zigzag pattern. This obstacle is a mainstay in Spartan races.
